Hello!

To make a long story short,
I was hit by a car riding my bicycle yesterday and injured my lower back. For the next year, there is a very good possibility i might need to stand when I play. Does anyone know of a tuba stand that will hold a 6/4 horn in the standing position?

I'm not specifically sure about the size factor, but the MM Tubas guy (eBay store) told me that their stand will raise enough to be usable while standing. But, I was asking with reference to a 3/4 sized horn.

I just now went into the other room and did an experiment. I have a DEG Tuba Rest. It comes with an extension. I put the extension on and adjusted it to the highest position. I tried it standing with my King 2340 and it was just a little bit short of ideal- maybe by about an inch. I'm 6'1" with most of the height in the trunk. Depending on your height and the position of your leadpipe (The distance between the bottom bow and the leadpipe would be critical), the DEG might do the job.

I bought it at WWBW. Dave Fedderly markets one at Baltimore Brass which is quite similar to the DEG. Since he's a tubist and does repair work, maybe he could modify it if it needs to be taller.

I once saw a guy use a stand on top of a chair. He was using a small F, not a 6/4, don't know if that makes any difference. Worth a shot?

König & Meyer does market two models of playing stands, one for sitting and the other for standing play.
I've bought both and I'm using them for my Melton Kaiser Tuba. Strongly recommended, very stable.
When ordering, be sure you order that one for standing playing, They are very similar.

Sorry to hear of your injury! Hope you are not in too much pain?

I would second the high K&M playing stand suggested by Lars. I have used to stand playing with both my Neptune and Cerveny Kaiser - it is strong, stable and works fine for 6/4 despite the 10kg limit given on that link.

This is a very clever system.. For other instruments than tuba. I know though that they have been developing this system also for the tuba, but it´s not in production. I had a chance to test it briefly in a class a couple of years ago. The good thing about this system is that it supports your horn, but you´re still able to move with it. It might be a worth to e-mail them.

The kid model looks very similar to BBC's stuba stand, which I'm also an owner of.
Actually, it's my most used tuba stand.

You should track down and talk to Sumner Erickson, who is, last I heard, living back in Austin, Texas. He played standing for many years in the Pittsburgh Symphony, and used a stand to support the instrument while doing so.

Those tall tubas come up for sale every so often.

I think a Tubatamer could have an extension added to the vertical bar to get a tuba high enough to play while standing. Only a Tubatamer has the weight to support a tuba held that high. Extentions to the legs to give it a wider stance may help as well.
If I worked a steady (sitdown) gig, I would love to hang a tuba from two ropes attached to the ceiling. That would enable me to walk up to and play tuba while wearing a guitar. I could even give it a swing out over the crowd.
