There are some interesting tidbits of information about the use of the Ophicleide in Brazilian Choro - a predecessor of jazz from the mid to late 1800s in this article:

Perhaps Marcus Rojas (esp. with Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos) or Edwin Rodriguez might have some better leads?

Just found a good sample of a Flute and Ophicleide duet in a Choro song named "Sao Joao Debaixo D'Agua"

Just found a motherlode of Brazilian historical recordings!
