Anyone had any experience with Silent Brass practice mutes? I am considering one, and I play a MW 2000. Any information at all is welcome regarding your experience with one of these. How quiet is it actually? Will it fit my horn?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jarrod,
I don't know if the Silent Brass mute will exactly fit your horn, but it should. It is well worth owning.
See this thread from 2006.

I own one, and I love it. I had an hour-long practice session at three in the morning one time, and didn't even wake up my roommate, who was sleeping less than ten feet away. I also routed it through bass guitar pedals during my band's last show and played all my solos with wah-wah and distortion, which sounded amazing. It's a versatile piece of equipment, and there's a lot of stuff you can do with it. I'd definitely recommend picking one up.

One piece of advice: use headphones with a solid bass output, otherwise you won't be able to hear yourself very well.

Now that I've read someone else has done it, I'll have to run mine through my Digitech guitar pedal and my Peavey bass amp. Perhaps the "Sitar" voice........
Good call. Just don't use too much reverb-- you can get some pretty nasty feedback that way. Also, if anybody's interested in the general "brass effects" concept, I tried a trombone with distortion and it sounded like heavy metal guitar work. I don't play trumpet, but I assume you'd get a similar result. Nothing quite like playing metal covers with a brass band, eh?

To me, the potential for experimentation outweighed the midnight practice sessions almost from day one. Once again, definitely a great tool for either purpose.

I have one and use it, but shop ebay for a Tuba Tamer tuba stand. The Silent Brass for tuba makes the tuba very top heavy and using it with a tuba tamer makes practicing a lot easier.
