I'm looking for a practice mute for my 983 Eb. I'll be practicing in my apartment, and hoping not to disturb my roomates. I've heard about a couple of them, but have never really played a practice mute... What might be a good one to buy without playing it first?

Yamaha Silent Brass ~ $380 @wwbw

Dennis Wick Tuba Practice Mute~ $225 @Dillons

Ion Balu Tuba Mute~ $200 http://www.ionbalu.com/Balu_Tuba_mutes.html" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

Trumcor Standard Stealth Tuba Mute~ $170 @Dillons

Humes & Berg Tuba Practice Mute~ $135 @Dillons

Schlipf Tuba Practice Mute~ $ ??? http://www.tuba-mute.com/index.php?page ... te&lang=en" target="_blank" target="_blank

thanks!

I purchased a Trumcor Deluxe Stealth CC Practice mute a few months ago so that I could practice in my apartment and am very satisfied with the results. I purchased the mute online through Thompson Music, and they had to have the mute special ordered because Trumcor only makes them as they are ordered, so allow a couple weeks for delivery.

I like the Trumcor much more than the Silent Brass that it replaced. It doesn't make the horn feel stuffy as with the Silent Brass, nor does it make the tuba feel extremely top heavy and awkward. I don't know that it is necessary to by the "Deluxe" model over the standard (the only difference is an adjustable tuning widget). I leave the tuning thing open all the time because I feel the response is a little bit better, so in terms of having it for the purpose of improved tuning I don't notice as much of a difference. Overall, the mute doesn't effect the intonation of the horn anymore than a regular straight mute, I pull out slightly when it is in the tuba.

The biggest issue I have noticed with the mute is the response of the low register. It takes a little bit of time to get adjusted to the response but it is not unbearable. I really like how it works in the middle and extreme ends of my range.

I would recommend this mute without any hesitation.

I chose the medium size so that it would better fit both of my tubas (an HB-21 and MW-45SLP). I am able to practice at the same time as my flute playing girlfriend without bothering her or the neighbors, so in my opinion it is well worth the money.

Hi-
If you own a Besson Eb tuba, the Dennis Wick practice mute for tuba was made for that horn in particular--I go with that one.

I use a Schlipf practice mute (size 6) with my Courtois 181 - similiar bell size as your Besson. It doesn't make the horn stuffy, it's light and can be transported in the bell. I would buy it again.

Klaus,
Schlipf visited me on his way to another customer and had his car filled with mutes (no joke!). He had practice mutes in different sizes with him to test. I do not recall exactly how much I paid, I'm quite sure it was something between 200 and 250 Euros.
If you plan a visit to Germany or Austria just phone him, perhaps you find a way to meet him.

I also own a 983, and use the Denis Wick mute with it for silent practice. It keeps the sound to a minimum...if I stick it in, and close the door, no one can here me play at all. I would definitely reccomend it over the silent brass or Humes and Berg any day.

I haven't tried any of the other mutes, so I can't comment on them.
