I know this thread has appeared numerous times, but I'm asking again due to my current situation. I was given one of those DEG stands last year...and I used it. I play a 2165 and needless to say, my stand died. What is a STRONG stand that will last? Thanks guys!

That's a really creative, CHEAP idea that I will most likely give a shot. Thanks for the tip Eric! Keep the ideas comin guys.

Every time this comes up, I post the same reply: Get a Baltimore Brass stand. They are built like small tanks and are extremely easy to use and transport. The legs are almost flat to the floor, so they don't get in the way of your feet, the saddle [where the tuba sits] is shaped perfectly for the bottom bow [and very rugged, itself], and the height adjustment knob is terrific, unlike that of your DEG!Also, it's pretty cheap, too, less than an inferior K&M stand.

A much more expensive solution is what I do. I use a Roc N Soc motorcycle drummer's throne and rest the bottom bow on the horn. That way I always have a nice padded seat for me and the tuba. It's certainly more to carry around and not for everyone, but it's the most comfortable solution I've found. Much more stable than a separate stand like the DEG, which I also have but hardly ever use.

Although the 12" paddle idea is quite creative, the Baltimore Brass stand seems like the best answer to me. It may not be cheap, but it is good.

As for the 12" "woody," I can't imagine any of the ladies on this forum choosing this option. I'm not even sure they would like you or me to try it, either.

My DEG stand died too. The problem for me was the height adjustment knob. The threads stripped out so I replaced with a nut and bolt(grade and have stripped out 3 of those. Ordered a BBC rest from comments here and waiting for it to arrive. I have a couple of dates next week and could use it.

I am just finishing up two prototype tuba stands right now. More to come next week.

Exactly right! I had the same experience; I sold the K&M for almost enough to buy the BB Stand. It now costs $85. [compared to the $110. for the K&M] and it's a whole lot better piece of equipment. The legs are the same as my Desca music stand, and they are great.

If you want strong, get a tubatamer.

I have been using a Tubassist stand for the last 3 years which I have screwed onto a folding wooden chair and that works best for me. The tuba is always the same height and I am always sitting on a suitable chair for playing.

I also like the fact that I can swivel the tuba while playing, unlike with the K&M stand (which I also have).

The Tubassist has well stood up to the weight of my Neptune.

Had the same prob....fixed it:

I replaced the hardware on my DEG stand with a mountainbike seat post quick release for my large B&S 6-valve BBb....it's not a 2165, but it's not a light-weight 4/4 tuba. Been using it for close to 10 years.

I actually had two versions of the DEG stand. The one above was also used with a 1937 York BBb. I sold the one shown above, but my original recieved the same treatment and I'm still using it today. The difference between the old version and the new version is that the old version had a bolt & collar hardware for the legs rather than a slide-bolt through the seat post as shown above. I like the old version better.

Yeah, I did the same thing with my DEG stand and it has not given me any problems since. I first started using it on my Holton 345, but since it is being restored I have used it with my silver York Master, which is still a very heavy horn.





You can also give it a little extra height by drilling another hole about an inch an a half higher on the center post for the pin that locks the legs in position. On mine the center post was hit the ground making the stand wabble and a little unstable. Drilling the extra hole raise the center post off the ground and made it very stable.
