Hi all,

I created this page for a class. Obviously it is not a complete list, so I wanted to invite you all to add to the list or update any information that may no longer be current. Also, I found very few birth dates so if any of you know those, please add them.

Is there any good reason why the list of euphonium players is longer then the one for tuba? And what makes a tuba player "notable"? I think it would be a good resource for those looking into colleges if this information was actually up to date and complete. I am pretty sure that Toby Hanks is no longer teaching at MSM unless he is sharing the duties with Alan Baer. I am also pretty sure that Mike Roylance is teaching at Boston University as well as New England Conservatory and Charles Villarubia is in Austin.

Some more to add to the list could include the tuba players in some of the major orchestras in the United States as well as the major conservatories and Universities.

Tubist of the Concertgebouworchestra. Changed the sound of the orchestra dramatically! Fantastic player. You should hear for example Concert grosso from Brass of the Concertgebouw or Bruckner 8....

I suddenly remember why I rarely visit TubeNet these days.

I was asked to START a tuba list because there was a euphonium list, but no tuba list. So I did. I never claimed it to be an exhaustive list. Where would I draw the line? I was simply sharing the list for any of you who might be interested in editing the list YOURSELF. That is how wikipedia works.

Howard Johnson, Bob Stewart, Marcus Rojas, Mark Rubin, Red Callendar, Joe Tarto, all have many recordings, playing (or played) in many jazz or other popular styles. Lots of others I could mention, but those come to mind quickly. Some already have pretty good Wiki pages, others need much more!

Now that's what I call defending your position! If you simply attack all of TubeNet, I'm certain you get to the one who has attacked your post. Just for the record, some of us were trying to understand your criteria for the list, in order to know who we feel might deserve to be on it. Admittedly, someone probably stepped over the line a bit. So now I guess you are going to(proverbially) "throw out the baby with the bathwater."

I would think that any list of important tuba players would have to include Mel Culbertson. My understanding is that he was the first player to win an orchestral position in France using an instrument other than the french C tuba, and in doing so, he started that instrument down the road to virtual extinction.

I don't think there another player who can claim to have dramatically changed the sound of an entire country's orchestras to the extent that Mel did.

With (or without) the OPs indulgence, I'd like to propose some catagories that might get people thinking:

1. Teaching: Tubists whose major influence has been on the teaching front. They haven't done a lot of recording or playing with famous groups but have managed to turn out many quality players over a long period of time. Also, their methods are widely used by other teachers.

2. Performance: Tubists whose major influence has been in the performance hall or in the recording studio. They have played on many recordings and have raised the bar significantly in the art of tuba performance. Also, they may have influenced a particular type and style of tuba performance over a great number of years.

3. Teaching and Performance: Tubists who are a combination of 1 and 2.

Just suggestions to get this moving in a positive direction. If the sports groups can do this with athletes, tubists can do it with performers and teachers.
