I know very little about the field of repair. A friend of mine emailed me the following and thought I'd ask here. Thoughts? Suggestions? Schooling?

"I picked up my son's saxophone from the repair guy today. He is older - probably 75 or so. His wife died a few months ago and he said he is having trouble getting the gumption to do his work. He is the only repair guy in this town of about 45,000 people. I told him I didn't know what I would do without him, as I get Kyle's instrument repaired every year. As I drove away, I thought maybe it was something I could learn to do. I know it would take years, but maybe this man would apprentice me and by the time he was ready to be done, I could take over the business. Do you have any idea if you can make money repairing band instruments?"

There are quite a number of successful repair people on TubeNet who make all or part of their income with band instrument repairs.

Search is your friend. The consensus from previous discussions has been that schooling is good but an apprenticeship with an expert who is both knowledgeable and willing to teach the skills is essential.
