The rest of the tuba section has a muted section while you have a muted tuba solo part at the same time? If it's a tutti section after your solo and you only have one beat to remove the mute, I'd just take the mute out safely, even if that means missing a few notes. I'm not familiar with this arrangement at all, though.

That says it all, doesn't it? And I bet the conductor isn't researching it anywhere. Probably not even on ConductNet. I suggest leaving the mute in for the entire piece and see if he notices.

I have always thought, On the whole, if conductors were as good as the tuba player in their orchestra, the orchestras would sound a heck of a lot better.

I'll leave it to someone who isn't jaded about conductors to tell you where to take the mute out.

I apply the same quote (adjusted for genre) without hesitation. Tuba players are so practical in their musicianship, they usually come prepared and are friendly. If a conductor gets one out of three of those, people are ecstatic.

As far as the muting goes, I would play until the tutti senza sordi. Since the other tuba's are coming in, it won't be a big deal to miss a note or two.













if you can't conduct it.....you probably shouldn't be rehearsing it........if you can do both of those, then you should probably answer score questions that relate to your players..... (I RARELY feel argumentative here....but that is SUCH...gha......)

Let the other tubas play the open part and pull the mute out at your convenience. We don't get paid by the note. (Unless there ARE no others to cover the Tutti part, then you're in trouble...)

Wait a second, wait a second, I like being paid by the note. Sometimes, during rests, I'll figure out the per note rate and I makes me feel superior to the strings. And do the orchestras know we are being paid by the note? The answer is simple, they used to. However, it got so expensive to count all of the individual notes after World War One that they started to pay all the musicians the same instead of paying the same for each note, ergo, tuba players get more money per note. True story.

I guess this was used when orchestras were pressured by the violin, clarinet and trumpet unions.

You were the one who implied the difficulty, not I. Seems as if you defended the directors not getting an answer for you with that statement, and I was simply relaying my disgust IF that was truly the case, which it is probably not...I hope.
