Also: defend the leadpipe at all costs! It's the Achilles of the tuba.

Put a hole into a chunk of Styrofoam that will fit over the leadpipe snuggly against the bell. Tape it to the bell for maximum effect, or at least lash it on with string if it's a nice finish.

From the number of tubas with tape marks I've seen, maybe people already know this.

Does anyone know where I can get a sturdy box like the Miraphone box used in the example? I'm worried that any box I get from USPS/UPS/FedEx won't be sturdy or thick enough.

Anyone know if Steve has any empty Miraphone boxes he wouldn't mind parting with? :P

I highly recommend U-Haul wardrobe size boxes. Very hefty and come in two sizes that accommodate tubas quite well. Certainly the tuba-specific boxes are best but... The U-Haul is hard to beat.

How many gallons of peanuts do you think I'll need? Thinking of buying two of these. Will it be enough?

I use the large (14 cubic foot) package from here:

I got some pretty strange looks from people in the NY subway with this gigantic bag...

Will that single be enough for the whole box?

Depends on the box. How many cu Ft is the box?

The boxes I typically use are 2 Ft x 2 Ft x 4 Ft... So that is 16 cubic feet. Subtract out some space for the tuba itself, and it should be more than enough peanut.

One small courtesy to suggest -- cover the bell with something, to prevent peanuts from getting posted inside.

I played a horrendous new Miraphone years ago... Just terrible! Then I rotated it and a single styrofoam peanut fell out. After that... Glorious!
