Maybe farting out of a sousaphone is just not my style of music.

American sousas seem to be very popular in Mexico. A couple of years ago, it wasn't unusual for me to send as many as two a week to a point in Texas for shipment on down to Mexico. The market was for used sousas... most any condition but certainly not in the range of $4,000. More like $400!

I ran into a sousaphone player at tuba Christmas in 2007 at Disneyland that had a very good tuba sound and to achieve the blast sound that most people get in this genre he would just play super ultra loud. I wish I had the chops this guy has ... talk about control... some of the banda tuba players are very accomplished musicians and can control their tone and volume very meticulously. He could do things with multiphonics that I have only heard Nat McIntosh do. I believe he learned Nat's techniques by ear. He was an army euphonium player for 4 years prior to moving to LA and getting into the Mexican music scene on sousaphone. He is awesome, and there are more like him out there ... they are the minority but so are people who we all admire in the classical music and jazz realms. The only difference I see is that some less qualified tuba players in the bandas arena actually can still find work. That just seems amazing to me.
