Tubenet,

What are some common pieces that show up on Children Concerts when you play them. I've subbed with a few regional orchestras and played a few things... Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet, Stravinsky Firebird, Overture to Superman. Those are ones I can remember....but what about you guys who do this more often then I do?

What is it that appears most often in your repertory as Children's Concert literature?

Thanks in advance,
--Chris

Movie music, young person's guide by britten, peter and the wolf, concertos, etc... in the hall of the mountain king ... it is usually like a pops cd or best of john williams thing. At least in Vegas.

I got a call a some years ago to play a kiddie concert on bass trombone. The main piece was Symphonie Fantastique. I turned it down, because I had just started getting serious about bass trombone. I knew how challenging the tuba part is, and figured the bass trombone part would be even worse. Imagine my surprise when I eventually saw the bass bone part and realized how much easier it was! Add this one to my list of regrets...

"Young People's Guide," check. Movie music, check. "Peter and the Wolf," check. Not to forget Sousa marches in keys only a string player could love. Last year we did a piece with narration called "The Probably Untrue Story of Mary who had a Little Lamb" by Micah Levy. We just did a cowboy themed concert which, in addition to "Rodeo," contained Ibert's "Le Chevalier Errant." I had visions of Gauloise puffing ranch hands in chaps and berets parking their horses to block the trail when they went on strike.
