Judas Maccabeus

Post by PWtuba »

Has anyone made a recording of William Bell's Judas Maccabeus Variations? I can't seem to find anything on the net. If so, where can I order it?

Bill Bell did, and you can listen to it right now on TubaHouse Radio:

use the "Select a Song" scrolly thing.

Enjoy!

Thank you, Mr. Finn, but I don't have the proper computer software to listen to the material on that website. Is there anywhere else on the web where I can hear that?

I think that Judas is on the Bill Bell and his Tuba CD (Selection #10). It's on mine, or is there a difference?

it's on there.

That recording, IMO, is a great showpiece for bad recording quality of a great player. I cringe every time I hear that album, it sounds like both the mic placement and the mic choice were pretty bad.

But the music is amazing!

When I played it in high school my father advised me to play each of the long triplet passages with one breath. Eventually I figured out how to make the notes short enough and light enough so I could do it, even with my somewhat limited lung capacity. Then when Bill Bell's record came out I was disappointed to hear the master pausing for breath in the middle of one of those passages. I am sure that Mr. Bell could do it when he was younger, but he couldn't on the day of the recording. I suspect that they told him that they could edit out the breath but they never got around to doing it. Back then it would have required scissors and scotch tape, but it's easy to fix it now with digital techniques.

Did Scott Watson record it on his stepping stones CD?
