Hi,

Does anyone have experience with the Tilz WH -B mouthpieces? It's the Walter Hilgers model line. They have 'em for F tuba as well, but I'm interested in the big ones, for BBb playing.

It's one of these you can see Prof. Hilgers using in the youtube German Brass movies. (I think)

I thought it might be a good match to my old Kaiser, since Mr. Hilgers uses it on his B&F kaiser. (but he would even have a nice tuba sound on a trumpet mouthpiece...)

Would I go for the large bore or the smaller one, and why?
I use my denis Wick 2L now, but that's not German enough.
I'm going to test them, but I wanted some background information.

Are there any Josef Klier mouthpieces I should look at too?
(I will ask for the PT line to, fyi.)

Thanks !

Wim

A recently issued mouthpiece model has surprised me by its versatility, and choosing mouthpieces after all is a very personal thing ideally requiring the testing of alternative options. Yet from general experiences:

The more narrow throat would give a more pronounced slotting, possibly an easier attack, and very likely the more German bite to the sound.

The wider throat would give a rounder sound, open up for louder dynamics, and allow you more influence on the intonation. The flip side is that you are obliged to be more conscious about controlling all aspects of playing. High range at low dynamics will be harder to control.

The wider rim being combined with the more open throath hints that the designer expects more pressure with the throat being opened up. I am not sure about that causality being a general fact.
