Does anybody know what size those unmarked old Conn mouthpieces are? Like the one shown in the picture just says "Conn". Not "Conn 1" or "Conn 2"....Would it be a Conn 1, 2 or 3? or neither?? Please let me know

I believe they were standard issue with Conn instruments, and as such, are a Conn 2.

Thanks, I've been trying for sooooo long to find a Conn 1 mouthpiece. But haven't had ANY luck.

I have one just like that but it's marked CONN 1.
I use it occasionally; it's probably the biggest mouthpiece I've ever come across.
Did Conn mark models 1 and 3 but leave the 2 just as 'Conn'?

No, I have a mouthpiece labeled "Conn 2". im guessing the ones labeled "conn" are the earlier Conn 2's. . but does ANYBODY know where i can find a conn 1?? i'll pay big money

I have Conn 1 and it is quite a nice mouthpiece; I use it on a Miraphone 184 where it really does work well and makes a good sound - a sound I want to make. I had my Conn 1 Satin Gold plated. I also own several Conn 2's, a Conn 3 and a Conn 4 mouthpiece. The Conn 3 works very well in my M-W 182. It makes a very light lyrical sound. The Conn 2 works pretty well on virtually anything I use it on. The Conn 4 is a nice large shank Euphonium mouthpiece and Bass Trombone mouthpiece.

It might be that these older Conns vary somewhat? Yours sounds different to mine at least.

I can't tell you exactly the diameter of my Conn 1 but it sure feels pretty w-i-d-e. As wide as a PT50 and much wider than both the PT60 & 62.
The 9mm throat sounds the same - H-U-G-E. Bigger than anything else I've seen.
But it's the cup depth which is the biggest difference to anything else; deeper than my shot glass.
Using the scientific method of putting my thumb in, the Conn 1 is about 5mm deeper than the PT50 and about 12mm deeper than a PT60.

Children could wear the Conn 1 as a hat.

Mal, some day, when I get time, I will do a photo session of all 4 of the Conn mouthpieces and put it on here so people can see the contrast in dimensions. But, to confirm what you said, they are ALL very deep. Still, there are other mouthpieces with similar dimensions and no one need to pine for a Conn 1 and do without something of a similar size.

Well ... not sure what you meant to include in ALL, but my Conn 3 is sure the shallowest tuba mouthpiece I've ever seen.

I was interested to see you mention the Marcinkiewicz 24AW, have you tried it? (I see you're only an hour away!) I wonder if you might be the only person on Tubenet to have ever seen one, and if you'd have any further comments about it?

Donn, I was referring to the Conn1 when talking about depth but I have other tuba mouthpieces as shallow as the Conn 3 (like a Klier T8-D). I have not paid much attention to Marcinkiewicz mouthpieces as most of them are far too large (cup width) for my taste.

If you are talking about my distance from Marcinkiewicz, it is about an hour. My distance from you is a little more than that, like 150 miles from here to the center of Seattle. Do you go to the HPNWBBb at all? Maybe we will run in to each other at one of those?

I was as you surmise thinking of your proximity to Marcinkiewicz. I like his H series mouthpieces, though they are indeed wide, but even if I didn't like them I would appreciate the detailed measurements he publishes.

I don't remember getting into any tuba conventions since the late '80s, but who knows what could happen.
