Hi folks!!!!

Could anybody tell me whose arrangement of the Galliard Sonata no.5 Bobo is playing on his recording?

I'm now playing from the Keith Brown edited trombone version, but I don't like the piano part so much...

BTW I'm looking for an edition in d minor. Not for example the encore/Wesley Jacobs Bb minor edition.....

I could very well be mistaken, but I thought it was the Keith Brown edition. I thought all he did was add ornamentation.

FWIW, the mention of a senior recital (program at end of the document) and the course number designation 4** seem to indicate this was an undergraduate document, written as partial fulfilment of the honors undergrad degree.

I do not see any reference of a graduate degree (doctorate), nor mention of a supervisory committee.

Only an observation.

That version sounds to me more similar to the version played on that l.p. by Ralph Grierson.

I agree, I think it was the Marx Edition for cello that Bobo used. When Bobo made this recording there were precious few works for tuba and the likelihood that he used anything other than an original cello version is small. Cello music is cheaper than tuba music, too.

I have an idea. jma78 should email Bobo (c'mon, you can find an email address for him somewhere on the web) and ask him. Then tell the rest of us. How about it, jma78? Will you do it?

I used the bassoon ones and they seemed to be pretty accurate to the Roger Bobo recording. I don't remember the publishre off the top of my head but might have been Edition Peters.

I still love that LP - all of the pieces are great, including the Galliard.

Maybe it's just nostalgia (since that was the recording I was "raised" on as a young tuba player), but I still have never heard a solo tuba recording that exceeds the artistry of that original Bobo LP.

Not intending to start any controversy - there are lots of wonderful recordings out there by masterful artists. I know there has been lots of discussion about Bobo's sound concept. I just still think of that recording as the Gold Standard.

I'd be interested (realize it would never happen) in "blind" first reactions to that recording compared to others by non-tuba-players hearing the recordings as first impressions.

I heard Bobo play this live in 1975 and he quite proudly introduced the piece and said he was using an F Bass Trumpet for that performance (1st Tuba -euph Symposium in Champaign, IL). I hated the sound of the instrument, but it was still amazing. I think I heard the Kraft "Encounters" about seven times that week!

Is this recording available on CD? I have an old dubbed cassette from 30 years ago. It would be nice to get a real recording of it.
