I checked up on the web about this event. One problematic and one sad fact came up.

The orchestra is the IRIS at home in the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. The website of the GPAC sadly is infected and repeated warnings about malware came up. As I am on Mac, I dared to go on. That was the problematic fact.

Sadly the concert was yesterday, so nobody should blame bloke for very specific marketing. I of cource couldn’t go there, but others might have been interested.

More or less sadly I think the bloke-o-phone presentation in a classical concert context is a productive step in increasing interest for classical orchestras. Sadly because it works on the superface, by which I mean that bloke would be able to trade those blues bars equally well on his B&S F or on his Thor even if they may look less spectacular.

We see the same attempt to reach out for the general public in the VPO New Years concerts, which I used to watch on TV, but unless the conductor puts an extraordinary fire in the orchestra, I find these concerts boring by now.

Our royal opera in Copenhagen has its New Years concert late afternoon on the 31st of December. That is the only time each year, where they dare double the normal ticket prices (and they still sell all tickets). A performance of Aida stuffed with big name international singers only has an add-on of 50% to the seat price.

At a New Years concert a few years ago they loaned my Conn 26K Eb sousaphone for the tubist to play in an arrangement of Bolero, where a very popular actor played the trombone solo. He is very musical, but after all he left the conservatory very early to make career as an actor, not as a trombonist. I am sure the public had a great time, but would they have attended a normal concert performance of Bolero?
