With just ONE tuba?TUBAD83 wrote:Can you say "symphonic band with strings"?
I got a kick out of the player to the left of the tuba pretending to tune his trombone!
Was that a Mexican symphony? What was the dude in from of the trombones playing? It looked like it might be a rotary bass trumpet.

I have not seen this layout before, but in a lot of Wagner Ring the tuba plays with the horns, so makes sense to be positioned in the middle.
What sort of tuba is he playing?

Re: Strange Orch. Tuba Set up????????
The trumpet and trombone sections apparently have their lead players to the far right. It is quite unusual to move the leading players away from the centre, where they can hear the other section leaders better. The tuba player gets a central position, but is his cooperation with the string basses well served, when they become harder to hear for him?

Although this looks to be strange, I have performed in several orchestras that use the same. Mostly they are used in Opera or Ballet orchestra formations, but also occasionally in symphonic programs. It is interesting for the members to be in a different position. Possibly the orchestra in question was also playing some Bruckner in the same program that required the conductor to make a better connection with the tuba-horns...

I think he's playing a Willson 5/4. CC or BBb, i'm not sure. I was at the Cincinnati Symphony Concert last night, and for the Britten American Overture, and Prokofiev Symphony No.6, they had the horns to the tuba players left. The same setup the l'elefant, has described his orchestra as being arranged. It sounded fantastic!

The videographer should invest in a better tripod & pan head. Those jerky pans and zooms give viewers a headache!

The trumpet sitting in front of the bass trombone has a rather pained expression at times. Payback is hell! Makes up for all those years the bass trombone has had to endure the screech trumpet in his ear in stage band. My left ear still isn't right. Did I say that right?
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.
