Excerpts Web Site

There have been a couple of threads on here about putting a website up similar to tromboneexcerpts.org . From what I understand, no one has made one? If I am correct in my assumption, I will take one for the team this summer and put one together to the best of my abilities. Any suggestions on recordings to use and which excerpts/sections to include would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what you think.

I think a good, easy check to see whether or not something is "game" to post online is to see if the piece (same published version, and everything else) is on the IMSLP. You won't be able to post any of the newer parts (Shostakovich, Adams, etc.), but a fair deal of tuba material could be put up, I think.

You also might want to talk to the Tromboneexcerpts.org management. They have a really nice set-up, so maybe they could help you out with this?

I've been doing some research on such things myself and have a few bits of info for you. Using the list that Ted Cox compiled in the ITEA journal, there are a few notable works that would be missing from such an archive.

Works by Berlioz, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Mendelsshon, Verdi, Franck, and Delibes will all be in the public domain in the US, Canada, and Europe. (Copyright terms are roughly 50 years after death for Canada, 70 for Europe and anything published before 1923 is fair game in the US though the laws are quite a bit more complicated after that)

Some composers that you will run into trouble with are as follows:
Hindemith: Died 1963 (Not PD in Canada until December 31 2013), most of his significant works were written after 1923, in this case Symphonic Metamorphosis (1943) and Mathis der Mahler (1933-1934)

Prokofiev: Died 1953 (PD in Canada currently), though most of his works are written after 1923 including his 5th (1944) and 6th (1947) symphonies, and Romeo and Juliet (1935-6).

Revueltas: Died 1940 (PD in Canada currently) Sensemaya was written in 1938.

Stravinsky: Died 1971 (Not PD in Canada until 2021) However, Petroushka (1911) and the Rite of Spring (1913) are public domain in the US.

Bartok: Died 1945 (PD in Canada) However, not PD in US due to Concerto for Orchestra (1943)

Gershwin: Died 1937 (PD in Canada) An American in Paris (1928) is not PD in the US

Here are some, I haven't finished the list but assuming you were able to host the website in Canada, the only composers that would be impossible to post in terms of widely used excerpts would be Shostakovich and Hindemith, though, Stravinsky would be an issue on a Canadian site. As already mentioned, IMSLP is a great resource for this music and a good model of working within copyright laws.

Note: I make no promises that this info is correct, but this is my current understanding. Some works may in fact be PD in the US due to other matters that I am not aware of (renewals etc).

i have a little thing like this for my personal use, it includes solo rep, low brass rep...

i think this would be a great tool for everyone and have considered doing the leg work before as i said i have it started already for my use... i have no desire to do the leg work now, but would love to be involved in this project...

go for it, even if you couldnt put up links to the actual pieces (recordings or .pdf), just listing the items and recommended recordings and possibly links to a place of purchase... that would still be a great tool... i also think it should be right here on Sean's site... i just like having a 'one stop shop' and we already have a great set up here... though i am not suggesting Sean should do it all on his own of course... just if he could provide the space on here for it...

So far I've comprised a list of 52 excerpts for the site. 7 of the excerpts are not public domain. What I will do is simply list the seven and give links to several good recordings to buy. Other than those 7, I will make my website almost identical to the tromboneexcerpts.org website. If there are any requests of additional things to add, post them on here. I'm thinking of having someone write things for each excerpt, like the Torchinsky books, if anyone remembers those. Let me know what you think tubenetters!

I will talk with him, I do like your idea because it is nice to have a "one-stop shop". I'm not sure how things will work because I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but I'll see what I can do.
