I seem to recall that there was a french horn player in the Philadelphia area about 40 years ago who made and used wooden mouthpieces, and I saw some alphorns in Switzerland with wooden mouthpieces. I have never been a big fan of wet wood myself, though. -Funky enough?

The Alphorns we purchased at our local Germania Mannerchor Club came with wooden mouthpieces. I don't know what kind of wood the mouthpieces are but it's VERY hard. They play well. I've tinkered with the idea of making some myself but it's just one of those projects that I haven't gotten around to yet. I would think that ebony or grenadilla would be good candidates for material.
