I'm happy to report that Fort Worth Police found my horn and caught the guy that stole it trying to sell it! I'd like to thank the whole community for their support and friendship. I'll be able to pick the horn up next week so I'll let you know if there's any damage or anything.

My PT6PS was stolen this morning from my car before I went to teach. No lectures please. It was in an Altieri gig bag. Serial is 094363. Please keep a lookout. Call me at 814-577-6780 or Fort Worth Police at 817-335-4222.

Texas has an interesting law that prevents pawn shops from selling for 30 days and the police are given detailed reports with serials. The officer also informed me that the shops are unlikely to give me any information. It is insured but still...

Also, my mouthpieces were in the bag PT88, Laskey 30H, Conn Heleberg as well as a Miraphone C9. Just a pain in the *** that I have to re-order all my music that I use daily as well as teaching materials.

Sucks, talk to repairmen and music stores around town. Look for someone trying to sell it or have it repaired.

When teaching a thousand private lessons a year it's not careless leaving you horn in your car, it's unavoidable. Bad karma.

Justin is one of my grad students at TCU and is preparing for the West Point audition. While there is never a good time to have an instrument stolen this is particularly untimely. If everyone can help put the word out, especially those of you living near the Dallas/Ft Worth area I know he would really appreciate it. He is aggresssively searching every available option to find his horn, but the more the word gets out and the more ears and eyes that are involved the better. Thanks in advance to any and all TubeNet watchers who can help.

I'm the only tuba enthusiast of whom I am aware in my neck of the woods, but I'll keep my eyes open. I'm so sorry this has happened to you at this crucial time.

Thanks for the encouragement. So far, no sign. I've scoured all the dumpsters in about a 2 mile radius as well as the wooded area around my apartment complex. So far, the insurance company is working with me pretty smoothly. They're going to replace the horn but I'm fighting for the mouthpieces, case and music too as they seem to think they aren't as important. The pawn shops aren't giving information (as I expected) but the music stores have been alerted and many friends have been spreading the word to the DFW metroplex. Again thank you all for your support and help. Funny thing- I've been offered so many more condolences for losing my horn than I have for losing family members!

I'll keep y'all updated as I hear.

Texas law prevents a person with a police report (or the police themselves) from requiring the pawn shop to check their held pawn for the missing serial number? I know about the law that prevents a pawn shop in Texas from turning around what amounts to collateral on a short-term loan. But that should not excuse holding stolen property when presented with bona fides.

I'm also surprised the Fort Worth police don't have a published list of stolen items over a certain value that they circulate to the pawn shops. A shop ignoring such a list should be busted if it is discovered that they knew the item was stolen but did not act.

Also check Craig's List in Houston. A local euphonium player had his horn stolen and perchance a low brass player in Houston saw it on Craig's list. Good news....a sting was concocted by the local police to retrieve the instrument. It was recovered and the thief was nabbed.

The police do have the authority to check pawn shops for stolen property--the problem is the amount of time it would take and the lack of personnel. The reality is searching pawn shops is not a high priority for the police--they simply don't have the time(nor the inclination--just keeping it REAL). Please keep in mind that pawn shops are privately owned businesses--owners/managers do not have to answer any questions or check their held pawn just because a private citizen asked. That is a police function. Not trying to be insensitive just letting yall know how it IS.

My advice: Treat this as an opportunity to get an even better nicer horn!

Don't want to complicate the already bad situation, but don't forget to check New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana craigslists...I'll stop by some pawn shops this weekend, and will definitely keep an eye out down here. Hope you recover your horn.

Congrats on recovering your horn!! Allow me to share some things I've learned both as a fellow victim of "horn theft" and from working in private security for over 20 years:

Lock and alarm your vehicle at ALL TIMES--no matter where you are. Good alarms scare off kids and amateurs--my guess is your thief is probably a crackhead looking for a way to pay for his habit. I have two alarms on my vehicle (the one that came with vehicle and another I had installed).

My horn is too big for my trunk so I have to put it in the back seat--had all the windows tinted and I keep a cover in my vehicle to place over my horn--to keep the "curious" away.

Again congrats on getting your baby back and hope you never have to go through that again.

Picked the horn up from the police today... Apparently, tubas have a going rate of $100 at pawn shops.
