Just found an old recording (70's?) of Pictures at an Exhibition by the LA Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta, recorded in the University of California.
Any idea who the massive sounding tuba(s) are and who plays the beautiful euphonium in Bydlo?

That would be Roger Bobo himself on the tuba...that includes the Bydlo solo, which I believe he played on an Alexander Bb Tenor Horn (there is a thread on this instrument somewhere around here..also see
Roger Bobo's website ). Bobo is
anything but shy on this recording. Its wonderful how he builds the solo and maintains control at such an extreme dynamic level.
I believe Roger played the rest of the recording on either a Miraphone 184 or 185. Anyone know for sure? Maybe Jim Self or Norm Pearson can shed some light.
Definitely a recording to have in your collection. I only have an old cassette of this. I'm just curious where you found this gem on CD.

Excellent, thanks Gary.
I actually have the recording on a stereo reel-reel tape, I recorded from a broadcast on BBC Radio 3 years ago.
If I find it on CD I'll let you know.

I was actually playing Roger's Alexander the other night in a tuba quartet rehearsal and mentioned this same recording to him. He said that he played Bydlo on his Miraphone F tuba for that recording. But the Alex Tenor Tuba is THE perfect Bydlo horn, especially this one! I'm going to check them out at the Musikmesse in February! May have to pick one up for myself if they still make them like the used to......
I'm very jealous of the new owner of this wonderful instrument, but at least he lets me use it when I like!
And James.....you're sounding great on it!
Cheers!
