Yup, marching season is coming up, and our section leader wants us to do a fanfare. We were planning to do tank, but our band director hates it (guess he played it too much in college, haha).

We might end up doing Sonic Boom (Tuba Players At Their Best), if we can actually get a good arrangement for it, and my friend is working on his own little fanfare (a few kids are helping him too).

So what are some fanfares you guys enjoy, got any ideas for some? If so, please post.

Really, all of those fanfares are very similar in composition. They love natural minor scales, harmonizing in 3rds and always having a "bass" voice.

Try to make something different thant that, though. Be careful, though, about the characteristics of the tuba ensemble. If you use a MIDI playback, though, you should get a decent idea of what performance would sound like.

And please, please, please, please make sure you keep good time in whatever it is you come up with. Hearing these sporadic fart noises on YouTube is like listening to the background blasts and such from a battlefield...

Being that I don't seriously consider myself a "sousaphone player," I sometimes enjoy listening to the power that some of the HBCU tuba sections get. While it may not be your typical tuba sound, it can be some exciting stuff.

Fanfare "Narcisse" - Andre Jolivet

UCF has been using a pretty sweet and short fanfare for several years. I forget the actual source, but an inquiry wouldn't hurt. It might be from a piece called "Throwdown"? Or maybe Homage to Leonin and Perotin?

Thats actually by Richard Strauss. It is a fantastic piece!
