Pick up electric bass. Great doubling instrument for tuba, and the basics are pretty straightforward. I had to pass up a decent number of potential gigs as a result of not knowing how to play bass ("sure, tuba works for some of our stuff, but such-and-such really needs a bass"), so I finally saved up and bought one about two months ago. Endless entertainment, lots of fun. I recommend it.

This might be a good time to work on singing. I had to lay off playing for several weeks because of burns. I spent the time working on sight singing, and at least for me, my ability to sight read and hear pitch imporved drasticly.

Sorry about your ear. It's really frightning when you can't hear right. What a bummer! I just had to lay off for 6 weeks with an ear issue, not nearly as serious as yours but a lay off none the less. I spent a lot of time at the computer with Sibelius. Got 4 arrangements out. Find something new to try.

I'd suggest doing vocal work, since singing is a great skill for any musicians. Learning guitar/bass isn't a bad idea either. If it were me, I'd be spending the time getting my piano chops stronger.

I would second the suggestion for the electric bass. It's easy to pick up for a tuba player. I taught myself out of curiosity and I've been playing since. (8 years now) You can even pick up a cheap combo at any guitar center to learn on. It opens up a lot of doors in regards to musicals/doubling gigs. Good luck!!!!
