Hello,

I am writing for some advice. I am looking for some great examples of Mr. Hilgers playing in an orchestral setting. I have the Ring cycle with Bayreuth under Boulez. I have been told that it was he who was playing. I also have Mahler 2 under Mehta that I was also told he was the tubist. Of course, I have lots of German Brass. Sooooo....what would y'all out there recommend me picking up? Thanks!

Mr. Hilgers played on Walkure and Siegfried in that cycle. The playing is absolutely spectacular, not just from the tuba, but the whole orchestra. Another great example of his playing are Bruckner 6,7,8,9 when he was a member of the NDR Symphony Orchestra under Gunter Wand. Hard to find more deep or spiritual Bruckner. The 8th may be the best in the catalogue. The one I am speaking of is the 1988 Live Version form the Lubeck Cathedral. The 1993 version is excellent also, but the 1988 is the one to get. Same with the Live 9th from around the same time. The Mahler 2 with Vienna is a recording I really like. Other people seem to disagree, but I like it. Plus the playing from the Vienna Philharmonic low brass will kill your speakers.

Zach, Please can you clarify which Mahler 2 you are referring. I would like to hear! Who is conducting?
