DEG Dilemma

Okay... here's the problem.

DEG has made at LEAST three versions of their nylon "marching" Mouthpieces. I have all three. One of them was a small/English shank mouthpiece with a fairly small bowl. Another is the modern one, which seams about the size of a Bach 22. Then there's the orphan.

An older version - which took a while to find - was a style a bit like an 18 cross/bred with a 12 cup, but a slightly sharper throat, comfy rim... It's absolutely wonderful. Ron Bishop discovered this disimilar style, and it took me a few ebay purchases of older mouthpieces before I found it's duplicate.

Now... I'm a fan of plastic mouthpeices, and this one is comfortable as hell, but I sure would like a metal version... this version seams a little lighter than I want for my Kalison DS CC.

**Does anyone know what DEG copied to make this mouthpiece?!?!**

Help :-)

Do you know the weights Denis Wick sells for some of his non-heavyweight mouthpieces?

If my memory serves me right, you are a repairman. If you have a lathe you may turn something the like sized to fit that DEG mouthpiece.

I've played the one you're talking about, kind of halfway between an 18 and a 12. To me, the nylon/nickelsilver combination had a "whang" to its tone I could never get used to. I measured it, and the one I played was closer to a 1.30 diameter cup with a moderate modern-18-style (non-sloped) rim.

I don't know what it may have been copied after, but it could actually have been a Bach 12, if Bach ever actually made any of their mouthpieces to "spec."

So what I need is a Bach 15 :-)

Actually, prior to finally finding one of these, I was using a Bach 12. I like almost everything about it, but the DEG has a better clarity, more definition, and a little more vibrant tone, less hollow.

I'll try the tone-ring idea (honestly don't know why I didn't already think of that - I Used one on my Kelly 18 when I played a Conn 52J for a while). But I may have to have someone make a replica in brass.

Any other ideas? It feels close to a Yamaha Self as well - any relation, you think?

Is of those MP's the one they called the 'Astro Cup'? I have one of those. It doesn't work for me but I thought it might be fun some day to use the shank to make some custom wood mouthpieces.

the Astro Cup is my emergency backup, and I used it on my King Jumbo Monster souzie (it's bigger than any other "Monster" souzies I've seen) with great results.
