Hey Guys!

I have been asked to perform a solo with a local community band next year, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn a new concerto/solo.

I am not up on the latest developments in the tuba solo literature, so I though that I would see what's HOT out there, in tuba solos w/band accompaniment!

I have unfortunately heard many solos that are essentially scales, arpeggios, and uninspired melodies. I am hoping to discover something with the charm/character/inventiveness of a Rachmaninoff piano concerto, or the Mendelssohn fiddle concerto.

Is there anything out there???

Nope.

I'd definitely check it Clare Grundman's "Tuba Rhapsody". It was written for tuba + band and it's very fun and full of energy. Definitely give it a look.

Bencriscutto Concertino for Tuba and Band. Not precisely "new," but if you haven't played it before, same thing, right? A lot of fun, and fantastic cadenzas.

Please consider looking at the Barbara York Concerto for Tuba . While originally written for tuba and Orchestra, BVD press also offers a version for tuba and Band. It is written in the Romantic style with homage to Rachmaninoff, in the second movement and other Russians in the other two movements. I played the Second movement this past year and it was very well received besides being lushly gorgeous. BVD press is a supporter and sponsor of TubeNet and was very supportive of me when I went to play it. I got all sorts of program notes from them as well as good suggestions from Barbara York for performance. Tim Buzbee has recorded it with the Iceland Philharmonic and it should be available later this summer in a recording with that orchestra. This concerto was written in 2004, as I remember.

There are mp.3's for your listening pleasure.

I played it on tour this year with my band, and it was very well received. It's a challenge for the band, and quite flashy for the soloist, yet is not that demanding.

Strauss Horn concerto No. 1

If allowed to do transcriptions, I've done the following:

Vaughn Williams (there's an excellent arrangement for band available)
Strauss 1 (echo?)
Herbert L. Clarke: Bride of the Waves
Arthur Pryor: Blue Bells

There're many other's in this vein, including Emmet's Lullaby and Beelzebub. It depends on whether you're doing a solo or a concerto. If you're looking to please the croud, wow them, or your band mates... many other items to consider.

An oldie is "From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific" by Herbert L. Clarke. It was done on Eb tuba last year with a community band of which I am a member.

Beelzebub is a LOT of fun to play. I played it (albeit with piano) for my recital a couple of months ago. I highly recommend it!
