Greetings TubeNetizens!

On the hunt for a good quintet horn, I recently dug an old Canadian Brass-model Getzen CC out of the bowels of my unit's supply shop. I like it a lot, but I am left wondering if there is a comparable horn in BBb that I could use in my jazz studies. Does anyone have any suggestions what might fit that bill?

I would think the Meinl-Weston 2011 HOWARD JOHNSON GRAVITY model BBb would be worth checking out. When I tried one, I got the impression it would make a great small ensemble BBb.

Wouldn’t the current King 2341 and/or its predecessor be worth looking at?

By the way, there is a nice used one at Baltimore brass for 4600 dollars.

Good luck finding one. The newer Holton BBb "Phillips" model might also be a potential contender.

I've never played the CB50, but I remember reading that the 1291 reminded some players of that horn *shrug*?

yes...or if the c. 11/16" bore is appealing but the King body/bell may (??) seem just a bit fat, there may be a Yamaha YBB-621 floating around for sale...(??)

Baltimore brass actually has a used ybb621 for 4500.

How about a new 2341 with a 52j bell?

I'll echo this - they play quite well.

I think the 52J/2341 might work, but having an old BBb King with a custom 18" bell from the 30's with the tuning slide before the valves (otherwise nearly identical to the modern 2341) gives me pause. The small bell really doesn't do justice to the sound. A friend has an identical instrument with the normal large bell and it's a world better in sound.

Then again, could be just a bad King...

Also an affordable HoJo is mentioned.

FYI: I have owned a CB and then a "Harvey" Holton and eventually became unhappy with both. But that's just me.
