Answers To Two Burning Questions

I just got off the phone with an authority at Conn-Selmer.....

1) The transition from the King 1240/41 to 2340/41 tubas occurred in June of 1980 with serial number 780900. That's supposed to be when the leadpipe changed from two bends to just a curve, the first valve slide went to the top, and the 3rd valve wrap 'uncurled'. I guess we can still argue about it. But... that's what the folks who should know said.

2) Conn is not currently producing a 4V cluster for the short-action sousas. (sorry TUBajohn20J)

Dan,

First, did you mean 1240/41 instead of 2040/41? (Must be Meinl-Weston brainwashing, heh)

Second, are you referring to the change from the curly-cue leadpipe to the straight to the valve block leadpipe?

Third, as you yourself (and others) have noted, the transition in features does not appear to have actually been that abrupt. No argument here, just an observation.

Thanks for the info,
Eric

Yes. I edited my post. Thanks!

Yes.... but NOT the tuning slide in the leadpipe very early version. I'm speaking of the pipe that had distinct bends in it instead of the gradual approach to the valve block.

I quizzed the folks at C/S pretty good about this... specifically the leadpipe, 1st valve slide, and 3rd valve wrap changes. Surely there were some running manufacturing changes but the model number 'officially' changed at serial number 780900.

Thanks for the info,
Eric
