I'm going to be in the Big Apple for a few days and I was wondering if anyone knows of cool tuba-related things to see or do. Any suggestions?

Not quite tuba, but you can visit Leonard Bernstein's grave. Greenwod Cemetary-Brooklyn. NYPhil has a summer set going on right now...I don't know how good the music this week is, but when I went, I got into 2 concerts (consecutive nights) for their Russian set..$12 each (as a student). You can take the subway and eventually NJ train to Woodbridge and try out tubas.
If you want, I can also point you in the direction of the best hot dogs in the world (Hiram's, Fort Lee NJ)

Be sure to check the calendar at Barbés in Brooklyn for low brass driven bands:

Not knowing your time frame for a NYC visit, or your interests:
The New York Philharmonic is playing free concerts in various locations July 14-20; however, there's only tuba the July 16 and 17 concerts (Mahler 1). Joe Exley (tubajoe here on Tubenet) may have some gigs going on; also Marcus Rojas. A trip to Dillon Music may be of interest. Some of the Broadway shows have scores with tuba: South Pacific (tuba); Chicago (string bass; tuba); Mary Poppins (bass trombone/tuba); Little Mermaid (bass trombone/tuba); Shrek (bass trombone/tuba); Lion King (bass trombone/tuba).

Do they still have that giant tuba at Carl Fischer downtown?

I was thinking of McSorley's too.

Just a coupla blocks from there used to be the Carl Fischer building, with one of the fabled BBBb tubas above the door. I know the building has long since changed hands; anyone know what happened to that instrument?

I've lived. I've been there, and I'd go back to Hiram's any day of the week. It was worth almost walking across the GWB twice for (...ok, so I took a bus...but it was raining)
Hiram's is just the best. There's no chance for competition...that's why Callahans (right nextdoor) closed up. (as far as I'm concerned)

The watering holes are always great fun.

July however is probably the least exciting month for music in NYC...! Everything slows down here and many musicians of every genre are on the road / out of town, even lots of weekly bands go on hiatus. In August things start to pick back up and then things get downright freaky into September and October.

But, this being NYC there is ALWAYS *something* going on...

I usually tell folks to avoid the touristy (and very expensive) jazz clubs, go seek out some crazy stuff!

Heh - Joe is right for club gigs, but the free stuff is in full swing. Time to check out the River2River festival, Summerstage, Celebrate Brooklyn, etc. Not so tuba centric, though.

Except that I'm playing at Monkeytown in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, tonight. A horrible, screeching, krautrock noisefest with a tuba.

If you're around the first week of Aug., I'll be playing in the Queens Festival Winds (formerly known as the Seuffert Band) at Forest Park. That's on Aug. 5 at 7:30 pm in Queens (not Manhattan.) Although, it's not really a tuba gig, I believe I'm playing Tuba Tiger Rag with the band.

Although we're kind of going for too shabby, so I'm a little disappointed in the critical reception so far...

Anyway, background - my first improvising tuba gig in five years, and I also play guitar in this group. Bass player was also in my quartet back in the day when it meant something to be a Knitting Factory regular. We make horrible noises for fun and profit. And we go on at 9PM if you want to swing by. Also, the food at Monkeytown is very good.

Maybe next year, end of June - one of my bands is booking a tour of NYC, Philly, and DC where we will play in the 4th of July parade (if all goes as planned )
