Does anyone know who Daryl Smith is? All I know is that he is named after a Kalison 4/4 horn; does anyone know any background info? I tried a google search, and didn't come up with much.

He is listed as the tubist on Frank Zappa's album "The Yellow Shark". Wikipedia link

I haven't really looked into it, but maybe he was with the Ensemble Modern, the group on the album?

It appears that he's the tubist with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra in Turin, Italy.

Kentuckian. Graduated high school in 1973 - Franklin County HS as I recall. I remember the year because he and Bob Bryant smoked me all the way through my junior year - then just Bob my senior year and for 2 years at UK. Daryl attended Indiana U and studied with Harvey Phillips. Next thing I knew he was playing in Milano.

Then his name wouldn't be "Daryl Smith"... it'd be "Kalison 4/4 Horn"!

No, no. The horn came first. His parents named him after the tuba because they must have been big fans of it. I bet he even owns one now.

I heard of a man named after car. It's not so weird.

Daryl was a student at IU when I was there. I think he was a senior (I was just taking lessons with Harvey) and decided to leave for Europe when he graduated because, at that time, it supposedly was pretty easy for American orchestral musicians to land jobs there. Others that I know did the same.
