A bit less on this site.
Does not seem to include a case or gigbag for the price... unbelieveable...

Re: Fasolt MW 196
Interesting the difference between 195 at 7,590 euro and 195/2 at 14,600 euro = 92% more for handmade version.
My understanding is that the standard model 195 price is kept as low as possible to be competitive for the extensive German band market, while most 195/2 would be bought by orchestral pros.

Re: Fasolt MW 196
Hmmm... unfortunately the catalogue leaves out a lot of MW´s tuba models. Little is being heard of the 197 (the big one with hardly any bell flare) and the model 200 (supposed to be a true 6/4 size, but I can´t find any specs).
So how does the 196 play ?

(I have no connection to the shop, they seem competitive in their Cerveny prices)
I guess a 197 is handmade too.
The 200, never seen one for real...

compared to neptuneNeptune wrote:Going by the picture, the Fasolt bell looks very much like the Neptune bell in profile. B&S and Meinl-Weston are the same company, so could be the case???
I notice they have also sensibly now moved the main water key on the Fasolt to the bottom of the tuning slide (instead of the side as on the Fafner)
BTW Looking at the Meinl-Weston website the 2165 is no longer listed, so wonder if that model has been discontinued (replaced by the Baer)?

Someone took a very close look at a Gronitz BZK before making the MW 196.tuben wrote:Close, but no cigar... wraps are different, and the bell flare looks different... the MW seems to have a more esthetically appealing bell taper....oedipoes wrote:make your own conclusion, but I think I found a clue...

It looks 85% the same, the bell taper difference is a result of the angle of the picture, looks the same to me.
Even the large ferrules are the same.
•5/4 Größe "Fasolt" (Orchester-Modell)
•4 Zylinderventile
•Schallstückdurchmesser 50cm
•Bohrung 21,5mm

Instrument in Messing mit Neusilberzügen,

Come on, no sigar but maybe some cigarillo's...

Re: Fasolt MW 196
There are many important differences twixt those two: Different leadpipe length and shape, different valve wrap on some valves, vastly different tuning slide span and shape, inner bows of different lengths as a result... they are substantially different. However, you can still have your cigarillos.

Sometimes you have to shake the tree to get a fresh apple.
I was just surfin' around the net to see what 'handmade' horns there are out there, with +/- the same specs as the 196.
I think the Gronitz BZK has a very fair price, as well as the PCK/PBK.
Too bad there was no PBK or BZK in stock when I visited the shop a month ago.
A part of me resists to buying a 10000EUR horn without having played it.
Another part says if a PBK is like a PCK, but with the 'advantages' of being in BBb, it should be a great horn.
Anyone tried the 196 already?

Can anyone post photos of someone holding and playing the 196 and the 200 to put them in perspective?

Sorry Steve,Steve Marcus wrote:Can anyone post photos of someone holding and playing the 196 and the 200 to put them in perspective?
I don't have the 196 Fasolt pictured in my lap.
But I'm an owner of the 200 since many years.
Unfortunately it's today out of production but replaced by the 195 Fafner and 196 Fasolt but also the 197.
The 200 is a true German Kaiser tuba. 500 mm bell and 21.5 mm bore, 1140 mm tall.
Actually it's very similar to the 25 model, but substantially bigger, a 6/4.
Please see below a picture of myself together with the 200.
Without me but compared to the Rudi Bayreuth model, the 200 to the right.

Re: Fasolt MW 196
I had a Fasolt at the Army Band Conference and quite a number of people played it and enjoyed the ease with which it played. It has a huge sound and plays extremely easily. The low register is very comfortable and not stuffy and for its size it is a very nimble horn. I couldn't get a real feel on the intonation due to the noise level, but nothing seemed out of place pitch-wise.
I think it is a very good instrument but probably not for everyone as I can't see using a horn that size for the quintet. It is probably close in size to the big Rudy. For my friend Richarrd, Bydlo was not really easy on this horn.
Just my observations.

Re: Fasolt MW 196
How does the Fasolt compare in overall size against Fafner? Any comparison photos?
