I've used trombatine on my tuning slides to get them moving nice and fast. I've heard conflicting opinions on whether trombatine is good/bad for the instrument. Can anyone shed some light on how harmful or not harmful trombatine is to the tuba?

I use it on tuba slides as well as on my bass trombone (hand slide and tuning slides). I figure if it's safe enough for a trombone handslide, then it's surely safe enough for to use on other instruments.

Trombone slides work best on lubricants taking the end form of oil and water emulsions improved by silicone and whatever additives. trombone slides shall be cleaned and the lubrivant shall renewed regularly.

I was warned off using trombone handslide lubricants on tuning slides 40 years ago, and my own experiences haven’t diminished the validity of that warning.

Trombone hand slides as well a tuning slides will stick, when left alone for a period, if they have been lubricated with this trombone handslide stuff. The water will soon evaporate and the residues will become a hard crust.

For tuning slides I use a rather stiff Vaseline type, actually the Yamaha slide grease. Slides may not move fast, but they will move. If I want faster action, I add a bit of valve oil.

Eh, not a fan of it (even on my trombone)...I use Slide-O-Mix on the ol' peashooter

I use STP Oil Treatment on my tuning slides and that works GREAT! You have to clean it off occaisionally and I was told to use charcoal lighter fluid to clean the slides and they worked as if they were brand new, literally.

Go for the STP stuff since it's cheaper than anything you get in a music shop and can be found at most any retail store...plus it works!
