Bell front mute (home made)

Today my old band mate Mogens visited me to try out some of the low brasses. He plays euph in the local railways band and BBb tuba in the National Guard band in our neighbourtown.

He took some photos. Among those one of one of my mutes for bell front basses.

I am no kitchen artist, but I like to have nice tools. A novelty a year ago was a rubber bowl for dish washing. But as I keep kitchen stuff and instruments separate entities, it wasn’t until those bowls went on sale, that I bought one for the basses. The pitch isn’t influenced much and the intonation is pretty reliable over the full range. However the resistance is increased and the response improves. The sound becomes very dark, but stays centered, only in a lower frequency range.

The sousaphone is the 40K. The odd thing under the right lamp is my B&H G bass fanfare trumpet. Right below the 40K bell is the de Prins 3+2 Saxhorn basse. One shelf lower is the Courtois Eb alto horn. The 3 clocksprings are from my left hand C piccolo flugelhorn.
