We often talk about the difference in sound between different tubas, but it is difficult to put into words. While editing my recording of a concert I played yesterday, I thought I heard one of the best sound comparisons I have come across of bass tuba to big contrabass tuba.
The other tuba starts on Besson 982 Eb, then I come in on my Neptune at 7 seconds into extract. I think it well demonstrates the more direct tone of a bass tuba against the enveloping 6/4 contrabass tone.

I think having both together in a band works well. While the contrabass provides a broad foundation, the bass tuba adds clarify.
Incidentally, this was recorded from the back of the hall - my Zoom H2 about 100 foot away

Good recording.
I'm tempted to post the rather well known picture of The Difference Between Europe and USA illustrated by side-by-side photos of female butts and paraphrase it to the Difference between bass and contrabass. Very tempted. Buy I won't because it would be quickly taken down. But y'all know the one I'm talking about.

There's always a middle-ground...SplatterTone wrote:I'm tempted to post the rather well known picture of The Difference Between Europe and USA illustrated by side-by-side photos of female butts and paraphrase it to the Difference between bass and contrabass. Thanks for the clip, Neptune! That difference is very nice to hear.

Good recording! I could even hear the musical director going "right, just steady on"!
