I just read this quote by Stan Mark, former trumpet player with Maynard Ferguson's band:
It takes four things to get the gig. 1. People have to know you. 2. You have to know people. 3. You have to have a great reputation. 4. You have to be a great player. You have to have the first three in order to get the opportunity to demonstrate #4.
