We were having a conversation over lunch today about how a tounge piercing would affect your playing. None of us had any experience with it. So could we please get ome input on how getting your tongue piercing would affect your playing. i.e. tounging (single and double) speed or any other problems that may arise. Thank

Tonguing with the tongue ring in or without?

I know when you have a tongue ring in, you're not really supposed to take it out much or it'd heal up ( I think ), so if you practice or play a lot, you may not want to have that.

I'd imagine that any change in your tongue (i.e. the hole) or having the ring in would cause a change in how you may sound. I'm curious to see if there's anyone who as some experience with this.

Yes we were talking as if you kept it in while you are playing

I honestly thought about doing it, but I am trying to get a few views on it first. I think it would make a good research project

No wind player should do this if they are serious about their playing.

I've known a few people that have gotten them, none of them musicians. They all had a rather amusing speech impediment for a while (a couple of weeks) and now have no trouble. One of the funniest words to have them say is Syllabus (for future reference ). I think the tongue re-learns how to operate and function "properly" again. The best example of re-learning is the case of Tongue bifurcation, in which the tongue is cut down the middle, the two sides (when healed) can function independently from one another like two separate muscles; that might also prove some interesting research.

Tongue piercings are for sissies. Get a Prince Albert. That won't bother your articulation.

I thought about getting one too (a long time ago, at a College far far away...) and I decided against it. I figured the healing time, the speech impediment and I don't think it's possible for you to flutter tongue at that point and I would imagine that double tonguing would also be a problem.

I had a student (trombone) who got his tongue pierced. It got infected and was dripping pus... INSIDE his mouth. He would play a few notes, wipe put the gunk, and play afew more notes. When he played loud you could hear the metal rattle against his teeth. When he went to jail, they made him take it out.

I guess I'm getting old, but I can not imagine why someone would willingly do that to themselves!

All I can say is it will keep one out of the US Army.

No wind player should do this if they are serious about their playing.

Maybe I am old fashioned but I would put it differently - A wind player is making a statement that they are not serious when they get a tongue piercing. A negative statement is made before you even play a note, let's face it jobs in the tuba world are in symphonies, military bands and universities - doubt if any of these people would hire a wind player with a tongue piercing.
