Pretty kick-*** piece! Also amazing to think that all eight performers on this recording are students of he and Norm Pearson. Awfully good tuba studio happening at USC - congrats to Jim and Norm!

Bad style to reply to ones own post, but as I have distributed the link in my private circles, I have become aware of one fact, I didn’t notice at first. Only that I heard some low note clarity, which only could come from bass tuba pedal notes. Since then I saw the text that all 8 members of the octet play F tubas. That makes the whole project even more impressive. From my own arranging I know how hard it is to write multipart settings for brass instruments all of the same pitch. And here we are talking 8 part writing.

From hearing this recording one would never suspect F tubas could be suffering ranges of diminished response or ever come by the idea that tubas could be built with less than perfect intonation.

The musical style is not one close to my preferences, but that problem is with me.
