I have always appreciated the fact that when I was playing next a good pro it seemed like I was at 95% effort and he was at maybe 70%. I had very little more to give and the pro could have very easily adapted to a much quicker tempo, much more volume, any articulation requested or a vast number of other factors being thrown into the mix. This is the result of them playing at 100% effort in the practice room for years and years. When they get out on the gig they have some cushion between what is expected of them from the conductor and score and what they are able to do. Huge difference from me the decent amatuer who is just trying not to screw it up. It is quite refreshing and a bit intimidating to play with them but I make sure I don't miss a chance.
