Aggghhh ! Circus marches ...would love to get a copy of the bass part for any of the old classics. Thunder and Blazes, Them Basses, Bombasto , Screamer, Squealer etc...for personal use, practice and measure the new ( old ) me, against the old ( young ) me . Anyone willing to share ? Thanks js

You "may" want to check the copyright status of Them Basses (and the other works listed), as well as the copyright status of the individual arrangements, before "sharing" them.

Comments on the two links given:

The Sousa link goes to the US-LOC. Scans are good, but some of the original parts apparently have been damaged with cut edges or the like. Doesn’t affect the readability. Quite a few of the entries come in two versions: band and small orchestra (lounge style with piano). The band versions are those that have thumbnails in landscape format. Band sizes vary from Civil War small bands with only a few woodwinds and Eb cornet as the top brass through large bands with full woodwind sections, drum corp, and fanfare trumpets.

http://www.bandmusicpdf.org/ is new to me. There are lots of music less known to me. Fortunately I found Bagley’s National Emblem, which I have hunted in vane for some time. The downside is, that at least the parts for that march are less well scanned. Several parts have spots where one or more of the staff lines have not ben caught by the scanner. It is possible to calculate the pitches of the note heads, but the immediacy of the music reading is gone by then.

Okay guys- lets say I keep my practice material requests to that which is in the public domain - but lets continue this discussion ...can someone , anyone, shed a little light on what is okay. If a buddy asks me for a copy of something, I d hate to think that I'd have to deny him and claim possible copyright infringement as my defense....what's the story ....jim

Sheesh, "fair use" http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html anyone? As long as he is not trying to profit from it from a paid public performance, I will send the OP a copy of "Entry of the Gladiators / Thunder and Blazes" for his/her own educational purposes.

Tuba parts (not entire scores) for hundred year old oom-pah music is pretty well below anyone's radar, even if it weren't fair use, which it is.

If the composers, arrangers, publishers, and/or copyright attorneys really had our interests at heart... there would be no such thing as POP music. Take Barnhouse for example.... EVERYTHING they ever published is available from their archives. They simply publish on demand. A tune (or part) might seem to cost a little more than normal but at least it's available. I have no problem buying music when I can.

Sorry, but you clearly don't understand the doctrine of Fair Use or the so-called academic and educational use exemption; cf. Reproduction of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians, C.2b.iii, Guidelines With Respect to Music.
