Peeps...
We're going to be in London October 1st thru the 5th. I had it in my head to catch something brass band-ish while there, perhaps a changing of the guard ceremony, etc. Would love any suggestions along those lines.
Thanx!
...Dave

Re: Things to do in London
I am not really into brass bands now a days, so can't tell you if anything on, but suggest you post question on http://www.theMouthpiece.com" target="_blank (the brass banding forum) and I am sure someone will answer you.
I suggest you visit Phil Parker shop while in London ( http://www.philparker.co.uk" target="_blank ) and the changing of the guard may be a way to hear a British military band.
I will be in London on Sunday 4th at an orchestra rehearsal and playing in a concert on 5th (Mendelssohn Elijah) and would be pleased to meet up for a drink if you would like. Just drop me a PM, or email.

Re: Things to do in London
There are a few good collections of instruments around London:
Royal College of Music, and
Horniman Museum (home of the Boosey & Hawkes "Gilded Monster")
Even the V&A has some things, but it is so huge the collection might be hard to find!
Museums are usually free for general admission in London.

You can also look for brass band and other concerts advertised on the website 4barsrest.com and the forum brass-forum.co.uk .

Not quite music-related but every tubist can appreciate finding a hot Krispy Kreme doughnut in one of their train stations or Harrod's department store. They're expensive but well worth every bite, especially when I don't get them as regularly as I used to.

The moment I walked into Victoria Station and saw the KK display, the Pavlovian response was immediate...drool and the urge to spend 7 GBP for a dozen. I even stuck my head in the bag and inhaled several times just to get the full effect. At Harrod's, just be careful when the red light gets turned on. The one inside the store is linked to one in the window on the street and a mild stampede occurs each time the hot ones are ready.the elephant wrote:HA! Those are a US Southern thing (1937 in North Carolina)! I knew they had branched out into England and Europe, but I did not know they were in the tubes and Harrod's! So…
Have yourself a nice curry. Then have a hot doughnut!

Go at least 50 miles in any direction on a B-road and see the real England....

Re: Things to do in London
Totally agree - but if you are in London for a relatively short visit, without a rental car (that is a scary thought for those who have never driven on the "other side of the road") or a clue of which train or bus to take out of the city center, the only real option is to stay within a relatively small zone. There is plenty to see in the city on a "Oyster Pass"charlieJ wrote:Go at least 50 miles in any direction on a B-road and see the real England....
(and much the same could be said of New York City or any other large city in the world - lots of really great things to see 50 miles away, but there is a lot of equally good things to see with a local subway-bus pass...)
If you want to trust a taxi driver to take you to that rural paradise just 50 miles out of town, well...
