mouthpiece for MW 551

Post by vintage7512 »

I recently bought a MW 551 and I need a mouthpiece apart from the one it came with. I love the low range with this mouthpiece but want a little ease in the higher range. I am a tuba player mostly but have been playing the euph once a week in a concert band. The sound of this instrument in the ranges I can easily play is fantastic, but it is tougher to play above the staff than I imagined and I think a different mouthpiece than what came with it would help. I'm sure a little practice wouldn't hurt either, but I do play quite a bit now. Anyway, it came with a MW 4 (I think). It has been suggested that I try a Schilke 51D - I play a 69C4 tuba MP - does that sound right? I can't even compare the MP I have because I don't know anything about it. I could use some advice, and a trip to play a bunch of them, I'm thinking.

Hey Steve,

Congrats on the new horn!

A few thoughts:
-- What did you use on your old Euph? (I think you had an old one, right?)
-- Give the MW-4 a try for a little longer, maybe?
-- Call Dave Fedderly. He sells the MW-551 too, and might have recommendations for you too.

Enjoy!

The old (borrowed) euph was a Yamaha 3 valve with a standard issue, one that came with it, student mouthpiece. I live near Baltimore and I was thinking of dropping by the BBC tomorrow (about 20 minutes away). I want to go armed and not waste his time like I usually do when I go. I bought a 30.00 used MP once, from David Fedderly, and he spent a good 45 minutes handing me different ones to play - He even corrected some of my playing tendencies, and I have always felt bad about the free lesson. He is a great guy, though. Just don't have the money I wish I did to buy one of everything in his shop!

Try the Denis Wick SM 3 or 3.5 or 4
I play the SM3 and it works brilliantly.

I am going back and try a few today - put a schilke 51 on hold. Still wasn't completely satisfied. Will try the wick models you suggest and thanks.

If you're near Baltimore you're not that far from me either, in the northern end of Silver Spring. You can try my stuff with no obligation, and I can recommend what I think you need based on how you play. Always call first. http://www.dougelliottmouthpieces.com" target="_blank" target="_blank

I make quite a few things that can make it lots easier for a tuba player to double on euph or trombone.
