I own a Miraphone 186 BBb tuba and today was able to get my hands on a 1291. As to be expected, the low-range on the 1291 is killer. At least much better than my 186's.

Surprisingly enough the high range is not as good as I thought it would, and my 186 has an easier range in notes such as the F above the staff.

Is it only me, or shouldn't CC tubas be able to play in the high end much easier, considering that it is an entire whole step above Bb? Please, someone kindly explain this to me.

My thoughts - as limited as they may be - but, range is in the player not the equipment. The horn doesn't make a noise unless you throw it at against a wall. The horn does nothing but amplify and color the sound of the buzz. There's no sound, music or noise in the horn - it's empty - hollow - it does nothing until YOU do something to it.

As I said, just my thoughts.

I played a Hirsbrunner piston Eb a lot this past summer, and a friend played a piston C (I do not know the model number). Both our experiences are pretty similar to yours, except ours didn't get better. Maybe that's why Hirsbrunner is what they are now...

You have to like what the horn does for you, and the horn has to like what you do with it.

Maybe rules are meant to be broken. My Gnagey has an awesome low register, stronger than my Neptune, and the best of any CC I've ever tried. Before Sam redid the receiver I had trouble locking it in from c1 to f1 although g1 rang pretty nicely. Now it's quite responsive up there but e1 is flat open, in tune 12 (thank goodness). However, the Neptune sings in the upper register even better than my 184. Go figure.
