Small mutes mute less. If too small the resonance bulb of the mute will rattle against the bell flare.

It has always been possible to adjust mute corks by cutting them or by glueing on additional strips of cork.

However the Ion Balu mutes, and possibly other brands also, have introduced a more flexible way of adjusting mutes: velcro strips glued on the mute and on the cork block respectively.

In my town we have a store mainly selling cheap Chinese goods. There I bought velcro pre-glued on the back. It comes in rolls or in circular pads. I have used the hooked velcro to place the cork blocks coming with the Balu mutes in other positions than the factory placed strips allow for.

With trombone and cornet mutes I have used strips cut from unused wine corks to adjust mutes. I haven’t come by cork blocks large enough for similar tuba purposes. I haven’t really sought for them yet, as my Balu blocks do the jobs so far. If I were in a pinch I might use styropor blocks combined with velcro.
