How often do you guys replace your felts??

To illuminate the felt discussion and its silent assumptions, let me tell you my experience with the Hirbrunner felts. The horn is a 2 year old CC, 4 piston 1 rotary valve, lightly used. A shop in Valencia, CA aligned the valves replacing the origianl felts to achieve a 0-0 upstroke, downstroke alignment setting. As stock the valve mis-alignments were as follows, valves 1-4: upstrokes -.008, +065, -.015 and +.084 inches. On the downstrokes, the stock mis-alignments were as follows: -.018, +.047, -.006 and +.045 inches. I'm sure the horn designer's intent was that there be no mis-alignment of the valves so that the sound pulse could move without unintended obstructions throughout the horn. Naturally through use the felts compress and introduce valve mis-alignment even though the valve "clunk" and "slap" (downstroke & upstroke) is initially absent, the mis-alignment is probably there. Does the 0-0 alignment setting make a difference? Well, the original +.084 inch mis-alignment of my 4th valve probably converted the Hirs nominal bore of .750 inches to a tuba with a .666 inch bore. Sort of like a B & H Eb or a Yamaha 3/4 tuba. But for $12k price what do you expect?
