Hey Gang;

I find myself playing on Conn Helleberg 7b MPs a lot these days on my big and medium horns. I like the rim and size pretty well, but I need something a little more cup-ee for my Cerveny 653 F. I am currently playing a Bobo Solo on the Cerveny and the horn behaves pretty well, but the sharp rim is a little more than I care for when I'm playing a lot.

Any suggestions 7b-comparable rims with a moderate cup?

An "Old Fashioned" solution might be to have somebody like Schilke make you one with the Helleberg 7-B rim duplicated with a 'blended' bowl of a Schilke 62. This is what I did over 40 years ago. It worked very well on my F and on occassion I would use it on my big King 4RV BBb. It gave a bowl very similar to Jakes adjustable at its shallow settings. Later years I turned the shank down to fit Boosey Imperial Eb. If I wanted to use it on a larger receiver I merely wrapped it with cork such as I used for clarinet tenon's.

I felt then and still feel it is best to stick with the same rim and vary other factors.

Of course these days there are almost certainly off the shelf solutions available.

Joe (bloke) has a mint condition Schilke 69 C4 for sale in the sale section that I think would work really well with your horn. It's a bowl cup mouthpiece with a nice cushioned rim.

Paul Sidey makes a mouthpiece that I think may fit the bill:

basically it is the smaller, older Helleberg rim on a medium bowl cup.

The SSH-MBII is a stainless steel medium bowl cup mouthpiece similar to the Bobo Solo and C4 types but with several twists. The outer shell is from the 1930s and the mouthpiece uses a a new smaller version of the SSH rim that is also used on the SSH-II funnel cup. Both a standard and large throat version are available in American shank.
Cup depth: 36.32 mm - Rim Inner diameter: 32.60mm
(standard throat- 7.5 mm - large throat- 8.15mm.)

Probably pretty similar to the 7B, but still pretty sharp, so maybe not what you're looking for. . .

I've had the most luck with a Bach 30E on the Cerveny (Bach 25 wasn't bad, either - not as small as the 30 and pretty comfy). . . if you could get a hold of the John Griffiths model (I think only available in Canada) it might be suitable for that horn.. .

Personally, I'm using a G&W Caver on my Cerveny 653, and also the Willson 3200S.

A Schilke 62 has similar inner dimensions to your Conn Helleberg 7B. The Schilke Helleberg (NOT the Helleberg II) is actually very similar to your Conn Helleberg 7b cupwise, but I don't know how similar the rim is.

If I were you, I'd buy a Schilke 62 and start there. I expect there are a lot of Schilke 62s sitting unused on shelves, so you will likely be able to find one used. The rim on the newer 62s is somewhat sharp. Older 62s have an exterior shape that looks like a Conn 2 and the rim is a bit rounder.

If you like the Schilke Helleberg rim, I would think I'd be fairly easy to order a Schilke 62 with a rim re-contoured like a Schilke Helleberg.

Could be some variation I guess, but my 7B is closer to the Schilke 66 - the 7B is about the same depth, a hair wider, and a little more funnel shaped. My Schilke 62 is shallower, and to a casual approximation the same width as the 66, with a similar bowl-compromise funnel shape. I like it.

Sorry, what I meant was that a 62 has a similar "slightly less than 32 mm" inner dimension, not that the cup shape was similar to a 7b. I apologize for being ambiguous.

Bloke, Just curious. . . Why "wait for a Laskey 30-[something other than "H"]"?

THANKS. I asked because I have recently switched from the Conn Helleberg to the Laskey 30H and I think the L30H is better for me. However, I also switched horns (Cerv 681 to 686) and receiver sizes (American to European). My range below low F is not yet where I want it (but probably not the mpc's fault), and I'm wondering if there's another mpc I should be trying.
BTW, is there a used mpc exchange someplace?
