I am based in Western Canada and have at least one horn that is in need of a major overhaul.Are there any Canadian `tubenetters`that could recommend someone in either Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton capable of carrying out this task?

For a "major overhaul", there is none better than Seattle's own Dan Orloh. This should be close enough to Vancouver to fit your bill? This kind of work is his specialty; it will not get done immediately but it will look like a million bucks when you get it back.

I was hoping that there would be someone in Canada who would be able to do the job. Seattle is a good three to four day drive from here and I would be delivering the horn myself. I just do not trust any of the carriers to transport the horn in one piece and then have it return after the work is done in one piece. I'll have to do some creative problem solving. Thanks for your suggestion! Dan Oberloh would be the ideal, that is for sure.

Consider all options including, possibly, trading something for an instrument which is ready to go without the wait. What I am thinking is that if you got in touch with Dan O. you could arrange a day to take your current instrument(s) and have an evaluation done on the extent of work to be done and a cost estimate/quote and time frame set.

While there you could check out new/used instruments, including fully restored ones and possibly find something you like as well or better. If such happened you would be in the ideal place to negotiate a trade-in which might not cost any more than it would to have one overhauled and be headed home with a done deal and no waiting for the job to be done.

I wish I was only 3 or 4 hours from Dan's shop - or any decent shop for that matter! Making your decision merely on the basis of a few hours driving could be a real case of losing bucks to save cents. A look at his web site (see shops here) and a phone call just might get you headed to a great solution.

Guess that's what happens when you get up early to rush off shifting horses and haven't had a coffee or cleaned the glasses yet

Then maybe, Western Canada is just a WHHOOOOOOOLLEE lot bigger than I thought - or maybe rough rider is gonna be driving a horse an cart. Anyway, I'd settle for a 3 or 4 DAY drive to get there as opposed to a four week swim across the serene lake. Anhow, hope he finds a good solution.

If you're willing to go as far as Vancouver, Seattle is just as close from where you're probably coming from (I'm assuming you're from Saskatchewan judging by the name).

You might check out Mike Durocher, the teacher in the instrument repair program at Keyano College (http://www.keyano.ca/Programs/default.a ... entialId=7" target="_blank) in Fort MacMurray, Alberta. He did some great work for all of us in Foothills Brass while we were up there last week.

Is Central Ontario too far?

I"m not sure about what shippers are available in Canada, but Greyhound and Amtrak are extremely reliable in the US. There may be some horror stories out there, but I haven't heard them. Truck lines are usually trustworthy as well, that's the primary way of shipping tubas to begin with. Pack it well, you'll be fine.
