Basically you got a couple options on this one.....buy an Asian clone- which is just as good as a Jupiter......or better yet stay with that St. Petersburg that you got......Jupiters are really just bad student horns....Jupiter=terrible..

Jupiter may have been a bad horn years ago, but you really should not judge everything by its past. Currently the Jupiter CC is a very good horn used by a number of professionals including Sam Pilafian, who helped in the design. The Boston Brass is sponsored by Jupiter. When I met and spoke with Andrew Hitz at a Boston Brass concert he spoke very highly of his Jupiter.

I use a Jupiter bass trombone and have found nothing lacking or wanting about the horn. Jupiter has worked hard over the years to change its image and in my opinion they are worth a look.

Just because this instrument is not as expensive as a Swiss made instrument doesn't mean that it's a terrible horn. Jupiter has followed the Yamaha model, but without the set-backs that Yamaha occasionally suffered. They have brought quality to budget minded players. Don Harry played a lacquer on at ITEC in Cincinnati and was quite impressed with the playability/price ratio.

They have also just finished development of a new 5/4 model that I have not had a chance to play yet. But I'm impressed with their progression of quality, diligence to customer satisfaction and ability to keep the prices in control. They have a lot of good people working there and a lot of experience.

I happened to be at Dillon's along with Chris Hall not too long ago. He and I both played several new Jupiter CC's and were really impressed with them. Some were better than others, but all of them exceeded my expectations.

You can not beat the price/performance ratio on these horns.

Well I am glad to hear that Jupiter is stepping up their game with the low brass. I do remember the stuff from years ago that was really bad....but I am glad to hear that they are getting better competitive instruments.....

To me, the Jupiter Tribune looks like a cross between a Kalison Daryl Smith, a Yamaha 822 and the slide position (sorta) of a Marzan. How do they compare price vs performance against a similar competitor (ie Conn 52J)??

About Jupiter instruments in general. They seem much improved since years passed. When I worked in a music store I had my wife play all of the student and intermediate flutes that we sold. She liked the Jupiter the best of the lot. We were both surprised. Then when I was still a band director, I had purchased several Jupiter instruments (ie tenor sax, intermediate trombone, etc). To me the quality was better than the Conn/Selmer stuff.

I see from your post that you are still in high school. I'd suggest you give yourself (and possibly your parents) a BIG financial break by buying something like the new Schiller CC 5-valve tuba with case. Price can be a little as $1780 on the auction site. I and several others who bought this horn have been very favorably impressed with it. In my humble opinion, the Schiller plays as well as most any $5000 tuba on the market. It's well-made and durable. This horn can easily take you on through college before you'd need to consider a more expensive instrument.

And, with due respect for all the wonderful tuba instructors out there, please remember that it is you who will be playing the horn (not them), and it is your money (not theirs) that will be paying for it.

Financing $5700 at $196 a month? Gotta be over 3 years right? I'd guess about 15% interest rate would seem about right for an unsecured loan (anyone jump in if they think it could be substantially less). Total amount paid is about $7200 or about $1500 extra in interest.

If you were my kid, I'd test your dedication by helping you buy one of the well-regarded chinese clones or a used decent horn at + - $2k and expect that since you're going to be a great tuba player, once you graduate college you should be able to finance not just an "adequate" horn but a truly great horn.

I know someone that owns a Silver Jupiter 584 CC,
He plays it in a local Brass Quintet and he and I were
participants at a week long Moravian Music festival,
he and the horn sounded fine.
He formally was a Tuba player in the Marine Corps and toured with Blast!,
he is now a High School band director.

I myself used to own a Jupiter 740 RL Bass Trombone,
it was a great horn, I bought it from Baltimore Brass.
I sold it when I got my Miraphone Contrabass Trombone.

But I agree with the jury, buy a cheaper new or used CC horn.
