Ole Schmidt is 19 years older than I and was considered one of the young hotshot conductors and composers when I was starting out in music. I even have played under him in a 1993 rehearsal of a piece he wrote for the concert band, where I played 4th horn.

OS was chief conductor for the Aarhus Symphony for some years. There he shared a double house with the symph tubist Hans Andersen.

Before that OS had recorded one of his cycles of Carl Nielsen symphonies with the LSO, where he got so well along with John Fletcher that he wrote him a tuba concerto.

When OS made his debut as a composer from the Copenhagen conservatory, he conducted his quartet for trumpet, cornet, trombone, and tuba (which I thought was for 2 trumpets, trombone, and tuba). My teacher Svend Rasmussen was the trombonist. He told me that some of the players considered the quartet very advanced those 50+ years ago from now. Actually one of the trumpet players became so scared, that his mouth dried out, and he had to leave the stage to drink water.

Edition Wilhelm Hansen in Copenhagen presents this work list for Ole Schmidt:

has a strong reputation for finding rare brass music. David Thompson used to be solo horn in the Barcelona symphony, but he is no longer listed as isn’t his wife, who was in the section. David runs one of the horn lists I subscribe to. I know him as being very helpful.
