Just installed Linux Mint on my computer and am looking for a minimalist (aka simple) program for jotting down compositions. Any suggestions?

Almost as good a question as pistons or rotors. I use Finale Print Music with some degree of success. I suspect there are easier programs to use, however. If there is any one you collaborate with regularly, get something compatible with theirs.

AFAIK, Make Music has not released a Linux version of Finale, though it is possible to run Finale in Linux in WINE.

There's a Debian-flavored version of the open source program MuseScore which, presumably, should run without too much tweaking in Mint.

+1 for MusicScore. You can find it in the Mint/Ubuntu repositories as "mscore." Check out the MusicScore thread.
