Both of these horns can be fantastic horns in the right hands. Go play both of them and see which one works the best for you. Also try some other horns. You may find something that works better than both of these FOR YOU.

1291: I liked the horn. For some reason it didn't really feel like a 5/4 but more like a 4/4. The slide set-up was not for me (I know, everything is accessible from the top. BUT I don't like the strain it puts on my left arm when reaching over the top bow to access them. I may be a wiener but you do feel it over a long period of time). The horn was fairly light which may more desirable for some. Intonation seemed alright with minimal slide pulling but the low range left me wanting a little more.

Thor: I'm not gonna lie, I love this horn. I want to eventually upgrade to it when I need the larger horn and EVERY TIME I play one (ITEC regional/TMEA) it reminds why I want it. The low range is very open and easy blowing; it doesn't suck the wind out of you. Intonation is good minimal to no slide pulling, the high range just sings, the top end of dynamics is substantial but easily controlled, and to top it off it's just as easy to play soft as it is to play loud. All of the valve slides are accessible under the top bow and allow for a less stressed back/shoulders. However, the horn definitely felt heavier (not a big issue for me as I am a bigger guy but It should be noted). Overall, It has the sound that I'm looking for.

With all of this said, these horns are completely different and NEED TO BE TEST PLAYED. Make the effort to go to a convention or store, bring a tuner, and ask yourself:
1.) Is it easy for me to hold while playing? (weight/slide placement/etc.)
2.) What's the intonation like? Do I have to pull slides frequently?
3.) How is the low/mid/high range? Is it easy to play? (including dynamics)
4.) DO I LIKE THE SOUND COMING OUT OF THE BELL?
Also, it would be a good idea to have someone with experience with you to get a second opinion.

Good luck with (what seems like) your future tuba hunting and keep us posted with your decision!
